Stow-away Self Storage is more than just a business; it’s a testament to the visionary spirit of Mr. Frank Cooney. In the late 1980s, Frank saw a burgeoning need for storage solutions in the Sutherland Shire and took a bold step to meet it. He acquired two adjoining blocks of land in a new greenfield development on the stunning shores of Woolooware Bay, just north of the Cronulla Sharks’ home ground.
From this vision, Stow-away Self Storage Caringbah was born. The state-of-the-art, two-storey complex, featuring over 300 self-storage units and an on-site manager’s residence, quickly became a cornerstone of the community. Frank, a gifted sign writer, personally designed the beloved “Stowie the Kangaroo” logo. This unique emblem, with a lock and key cleverly integrated into the kangaroo’s pouch, also paid tribute to the local Sharkies with its black, blue, and white colors and distinctive football boots.
In 1995, Frank’s ambition led him to the old Tip-Top bakery site in Belfield. Through extensive renovations, he transformed it into a modern facility with 380 self-storage units and 37 car spaces. Even after selling the Caringbah site, which continues to operate as a licensee of Kennards Self Storage, Frank’s legacy lived on.
The turn of the millennium saw Frank supporting his son-in-law, Greg Petty, in acquiring a property in Unanderra. By 2001, Stow-away Self Storage Unanderra opened its doors, continuing the tradition of excellence and community service.
Frank’s pioneering efforts were recognized with a life membership from the Self Storage Association of Australasia, where he served as the foundation President. Stow-away Self Storage proudly holds membership number 2, symbolizing our enduring commitment to innovation and quality.
